Good Bin Hunting...
Vic's Collectibles, Bogota, NJ
Good Bin Hunting will be a regular feature on this blog. The goal is to spotlight collectible shops and comic book stores in NJ that I feel cater to the working-class collector and treasure hunter alike. I'll also spotlight some of the back issue finds I made while visiting these places. The first stop takes us to: Vic's Collector Shop 38 West Fort Lee Road Bogota, NJ 07603 201-696-2658 |
I've frequented this shop several times over the course of the spring/summer and it never disappoints. Vic, the owner, has been buying and selling collectibles of all kinds for 30+ years. He is incredibly personable and knowledgable. He even hosts monthly workshops on getting into the collectibles business. The storefront is open only on Saturday and Sunday as Vic typically works a 60+ hour work week. This shop isn't even his full time gig yet he's always buying and selling!!!
The few times I went to Vic's store I would typically find 7-8 long boxes and a few crates of comic books to sort through. Most of the comic books were priced at 0.50 cents with the exception of a few long boxes for sale that belonged to his son. Those prices were as marked. I personally get my kicks from sorting through the untouched collections Vic buys in bulk. I'll also mention that most of the comic books in the boxes were not bagged or boarded but I would say however that at least 75% of the books were in excellent shape ranging from very good to near mint condition. The long boxes contained both Marvel/DC comics that range from late Bronze Age to Modern Age books (90's) and were randomly organized within.
There were some notable finds in the long boxes including: early Wolverine (1988 Series) issues, The Silver Surfer (1987 series) issues that span the Rebirth of Thanos and re-introduction of characters like Drax the Destroyer and Adam Warlock, the Infinity Gauntlet issues 1-3, the entire V for Vendetta series, and G.I. Joe issues 26 & 27 which are key Snake Eyes issues. All and all a very eclectic range of comics that I think potentially hold more than the 0.50 cent per issue cost value.

My Top Key Issue Finds at Vic's Collector Shop
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend making the trip to Vic's Collector shop. If for no other reason than to meet the owner himself and while Vic seems to specialize more in rare coins and gold/silver he does have a sincere appreciation for comic book collecting. Last time I was there he even mentioned to me that what I was sorting through was only the tip of the iceberg. Apparently, there were lots and lots more comic books both in the shop's basement as well as in a warehouse across the street from the store. Since Vic only does this on weekends he hasn't had the time to sort through all his other acquired comic book collections. I imagined the last scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark with all those crates and what may lie within. I'll be the first one on line when Vic does start showcasing those comics!
FYI: Vic will be featuring some of his comics at the Rutherford Street Fair on Monday, Sept. 3rd, 2012.
